Technical director (TD) position
Position Overview:
The Technical Director (TD) is primarily responsible for supervision and implementation of all production elements (lighting, sound, set design and construction, etc.) of all Merely Players Community Theatre productions. The Technical Director ensures safe-working practices, provides rental oversight for the use of the theatre resources by outside groups, and facilitates repair and maintenance of the theatre resources and equipment.
Reports To: Artistic Director
Job Type: Part time, averaging 8 hours per week annually, with increased hours during production periods and fewer during the off-season. Not to exceed 416 hours/year.
Pay: $6,225 annually, paid with a monthly stipend of $518.75
Terms/Conditions: This is an at-will, stipend position. Employment can be terminated at any time by either the employee or Merely Players, with or without cause or notice.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Leadership & Planning
Advises Artistic Director and Production Team on the technical specifications, costs, usage, and safety of technical equipment required for the individual show.
Ensures completion of acquisition of materials and construction of all scenic design elements within the designated time period as determined by the overall production schedule.
Ensures the smooth operation of the technical aspects of each production.
In conjunction with the Artistic Director, the Technical Director develops the yearlong production calendar detailing all related production tasks, including but not limited to: Technical Production Deadlines, Strike, and Technical Rehearsals
Budget Development and assistance in fundraising
Technical Systems - Provide guidance for all technical systems, including but not limited to:
Theatre in General
Set construction tools and equipment
Audio Systems
Rigging Systems
Lighting Systems
Production Intercom System
Back of House Monitoring System
Provides updated job descriptions for the Lights and Sound Director.
Guidance for these systems shall include:
Working knowledge of each system
An ongoing inventory of each system
A proposed project list
A visioning plan for each system
Stays abreast of new technology and software relative to lighting and audio engineering
Maintains an operational manual of all technical systems
Volunteer Engagement
Work with the Volunteer Committee to develop a base of volunteers for the technical aspects of production.
Helps recruit, manage, and retain technical theatre volunteers
Develops and maintains relationships with local designers, builders, and colleges with technical training programs.
Stipend Positions
Ensure the recruitment of set builder, lights, and sound.
Oversees the completion of strike of set, lights, and sound prior to stipend payment.
Meetings & Administrative Duties
Submit monthly written Technical Director reports.
Attend annual budget meeting with suggestions for necessary theatre and equipment upkeep/upgrades.
Attend production meetings, technical rehearsals, and performances as needed
